Stage 5 - Industrial Technology

Course Overview

Students at Avondale School excel in Industrial Technology due to the first-class facilities and industry-standard equipment in the Trade Training Centre combined with a rich heritage in project-based learning. As such, this course enables students to develop knowledge, skills, and real-life working values as they learn to safely use timber technologies and techniques in an industrial environment. Through the design process they learn to apply their creativity by planning, developing, constructing and evaluating quality projects based on individual ability and interests. Critical thinking is fostered as practical problems are solved during project realisation, and communication skills enhanced as written reports and project management folios are generated. Students spend the majority of course time undertaking practical learning activities.

Course Content

This course aims to develop student understanding of the interrelationships between technology, the individual, society and the environment, and to develop their ability to think creatively to produce solutions to practical problems. Topic areas covered in this NESA-approved course are:

Core Module 1 + Core Module 2 (Year 9)

Specialised Module – Cabinetmaking (Year 10)

  • WHS and risk management
  • Design
  • Materials
  • Tools, equipment and techniques
  • Workplace communication skills
  • Societal and environmental impact
  • Links to industry

Course Assessment

A significant portion of student assessment is based on management and completion of quality timber projects that they individually design. Project categories include coffee tables, bedroom furnishings, and a major cabinetmaking item. Project Management Folios, research tasks, report writing, and plan drawing are other assessment items used in this course.

Project Costs

The cost of consumables and projects made in Year 9 are covered in subject fees. However, the cost of the Major Practical Project in Year 10 is the student’s responsibility.

Possible Subject Pathways in Stage 6

The Stage 5 Industrial Technology course provides a positive grounding for students who study HSC subjects such as Design and Technology and Construction.
