Year 11 Urban Challenge

Secondary News - May 20, 2022

Wednesday morning last week was an early start for both staff and Year 11 students as they met at Morisset Station at 6.00am for the beginning of the Urban Challenge. The Urban Challenge is a school camp in the centre of Sydney that allows students to experience a range of opportunities and events that help build confidence and demystify the inner-city experience.

The first event, a tour of The University of Sydney, did not go to plan as students learnt about demonstrations, picket lines and strikes from leaders at the University rather than getting a traditional tour of the campus. The demonstration leaders took time from their protests to share the current issues being faced in tertiary institutions.

Wet weather also affected several activities but did not stop the students enjoying a historical harbour cruise on a tall ship highlighting the various islands, national parks and historical features of Sydney Harbour. The biggest highlight was a trip to Bankstown where staff and student had the chance to go on a Taste Cultural Food Tour. Local guides shared mouth-watering delights and stories of food, history, and culture.

Before returning to home on Friday, students had the opportunity to do a Great Race around the centre of Sydney using their problem-solving skills and creativity to answer clues and navigate their way through the city before returning home for a well-earned rest.
